Deuteronomy 12:1, 5-12 theme verse Deuteronomy 12:7

The praise and honor and glory be to our heavenly Father who seeks true worshipers who worship Him with the Spirit and truth.

On this thirty-eighth Sunday of the year 2026, I pray that the grace of the Holy Spirit may be full in you. Last week we looked at the privileges and duties of the saints. This week, through today's text in Deuteronomy 12, we would like to look at just how great a joy this worship we offer every week truly is.

1) Deuteronomy is also called "the book of words," from its first sentence, "these are the words," and "the book of hortatory directives." The English title "Deuteronomy" means "the second law." Professor Michael Williams says the theme of the book is that God gives Moses instructions for the second generation of Israel regarding faithful life in the Promised Land. The book is made up of three sermons: chapters 1-4 look back on the journey and invite obedience; chapters 5-28 exhort the people to live by the Ten Commandments and the Shema, including today's text on the life of worship; and chapters 29-34 close with the covenant at Moab, the transfer of leadership to Joshua, and Moses' final blessing.

2) Today's text, Deuteronomy 12:1-12, carries the message, "Worship the LORD in the place He has chosen." In verses 1-7, God tells them to tear down the idols and worship the LORD in the place He has chosen, bringing their offerings, eating there before the LORD, and rejoicing with their households. In verses 8-12, unlike before, they are not to do whatever is right in their own eyes, but when they come to the land of rest, they are to bring all He commands to the place He will choose, and rejoice before the LORD together with their children, servants, and even the Levites who have no inheritance.

3) What is worship? I believe worship is love for God. In Matthew 22, the Lord said the greatest commandment is to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind, and the second is to love our neighbor as ourselves. The first tablet of the Ten Commandments concerns loving God, which means serving Him alone and worshiping Him on the Lord's Day — so to love God is to live a life of worship.

Today's text speaks clearly about the place of worship: verse 5 says to worship "at the place that the LORD your God will choose... to put his name." That place is the church, for the Lord said in Matthew 18:20, "For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them." And in verses 7 and 12, as it says to "eat before the LORD your God, and rejoice," we know that worshiping God is itself a joy. That's why the psalmist sang in Psalm 16:11, "You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore."

4) In 2 Chronicles 2:4, Solomon called the offerings on the Sabbaths and appointed feasts a perpetual statute. God is the Creator of time and the Sovereign of history, so all time belongs to Him, but by setting apart one day out of seven we remember our Creator and give Him thanks — though this does not mean we may live however we like the other six days. In truth, we are to live a life that worships God all seven days. Does this become a burden? Absolutely not — Isaiah 58:13-14 says that if we call the Sabbath a delight, we will take delight in the LORD, and He will make us ride on the heights of the earth.

5) In verses 6 and 11, we are told to bring various offerings — burnt offerings, sacrifices, tithes, contributions, vow offerings, freewill offerings, and the firstborn of our herds and flocks. The burnt offering represents complete devotion; the sacrifice is partly burned and partly shared; the tithe supports the priests; the contribution becomes the priest's portion; the vow offering is a conditional promise; the freewill offering is an overflow of gratitude; and the firstborn recalls the exodus, when every firstborn came to belong uniquely to God. As Acts 17:24-28 says, God, having made the universe and given life and breath to all things, is the sovereign Ruler over all — and bringing these offerings is a confession of faith that acknowledges God as Creator, Provider, and Sovereign.

6) Since God is the Creator, Provider, Owner, Sovereign, and Judge of all things, we, His creatures, ought to worship Him and give Him thanks. Romans 1 says worship is the honor a creature owes its Creator. But worship also brings us great benefit: first, it brings us great gladness and joy, as the psalmist confessed in Psalm 16:11. And in the New Testament era, when Jesus died on the cross, the temple curtain was torn, so that we can now enter even the Holy of Holies through His blood — there we experience God's presence, His glory, and His Word.

7) Worship means setting apart one day out of seven, acknowledging that everything belongs to God, and bringing an offering of praise and thanksgiving — and then God gives us His presence, the guidance of His Word, and the restoration of joy, glory, and peace, so that we may go back into the world and reflect that same glory back into it all week long, at home and in society. This is exactly why Deuteronomy 12 tells us to bring everything to the place He will choose, together with our children, servants, and the Levites, to offer a communal worship of joy — the principle of worship offered in wholehearted devotion in the presence of God.

8) Therefore, I pray that all of us gathered here would, this whole year, become people who offer this kind of joyful and glorious worship — not only in church, but also at home and in society, so that we may all become His holy people who, in church, at home, and in society, reveal God's glory and so give Him glory.

Key Questions as Small Group Activity

Q1 Through today's text, we came to know that God created and rules over all things and supplies all our needs, so we ought to give Him thanks and praise. So, after reflecting on ourselves for a moment and looking at whether we are truly living a life that recognizes God's provision and gives Him thanks and praise, I hope we could share our thoughts and experiences with one another.

Q2 And also we came to know that through worship we can enjoy God's joy, presence, and guidance, as well as His glory, joy, and peace. So, after reflecting on ourselves for a moment and thinking about whether we are truly enjoying this grace of worship, I hope we could share our thoughts, experiences, and the grace we have received with our team members.

Love you. Thank you. God bless you.
