Sermon26-42 Mt11 "Obigation of the Saints"

The praise and honor and glory be to our heavenly Father who seeks true worshipers who worship Him with the Spirit and truth.

On this thirty seventh Sunday of 2026, I pray that His grace of all the benefits Jesus earned for our salvation, and the ministry of proclaiming His kingdom by the Holy Spirit, may be full in our life. Last week we looked at who the church is; this week, at the obligation of the Saints.

1) First, the context of today’s text. After chapters 1-10 on Jesus’ birth, John the Baptist’s testimony and Jesus’ public ministry, Matthew introduces in chapters 11 and 12 the response of the leaders of Israel: they rebelled against Christ. When John the Baptist was imprisoned his faith wavered, because from Isaiah 61:1-2 Jesus read only “the year of the Lord’s favor” and not “the day of vengeance of our God” — so the rescue John expected did not come. Yet our Lord recovered his faith by reminding him of the prophecies about the Messiah. Then He rebuked those who did not repent (11:20-24), and in 11:25-30 invited them into salvation again.

2) After our Lord rebuked the three cities of the “Gospel Triangle” — Bethsaida, Chorazin and Capernaum, where He performed the most miracles — for not repenting, He said it was the Father’s will to hide the truth of salvation from the wise and intelligent, yet reveal it to little children. Then He proclaimed the Gospel invitation: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

3) Through three imperative sentences in this invitation we find three duties as His disciples. First, we have to come to the Lord in response to His calling. Secondly, we have to learn from Him — meekness and humility, because even though we have been born again, sinfulness still remains within us. Humility realizes there is nothing to rely on in oneself and relies totally on God; meekness is the attitude ready to obey the Lord’s commands. They are the goals of Christian growth — that’s why Romans 8:29 says, “He predestined us to be conformed to the image of His Son.” And finally, the Lord tells us to take up His yoke.

4) And the Lord’s yoke means, among many things, that the yoke He has given us is to build His church: to diligently keep the unity of the Spirit (Eph 4:3), to build His church in love (Eph 4:16), and to diligently equip the saints (Eph 4:12).

5) And the second is the responsibility for God’s creation world: the Great Commission of Matthew 28:18-20, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them… teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you,” and the cultural mandate of Genesis 1:28, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over… every living thing that moves on the earth.” So we are to make disciples of all nations, and to help all people and nature achieve God’s purpose for them — mercy ministry being one of them.

6) And regarding these obligations of the Saints, Belgic Confession article 28 confesses that “since this holy assembly and congregation is the gathering of those who are saved… people ought not to withdraw from it. But all people are obliged to join and unite with it, keeping the unity of the church by submitting to its instruction and discipline, by bending their necks under the yoke of Jesus Christ, and by serving to build up one another.”

7) This exhortation not to separate from the congregation may cause some discomfort to modern people who value freedom a lot. However, if we knew how amazing it is to become a member of His church, we would accept it more joyfully: as members we experience a mystic union with Christ through the Word and the Holy Spirit, the glory of God in His worship, the Word of righteousness, the intimacy with God in prayer, and the fellowship with the Triune God and the saints. So the responsibility is rather an invitation to His amazing grace.

8) That’s why our Lord says in verses 29 and 30 that “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and light.” It is easy and light because an amazing grace is prepared that surpasses our labor and suffering, and because with a humble and gentle heart we work by His power, not our own — “It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me” (Gal 2:20).

9) Therefore, when the Lord calls us, may we come to Him, learn from Him, and bear His yoke, and enjoy the glory of worship, the righteousness of the Word, the intimacy of prayer, and the joy of fellowship — for “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me” (Phil 4:13). So I pray that this year we all learn the humility and meekness of Christ and enjoy His joy by fulfilling His mission.
